Best Hospitality Apprenticeships for 16-year-olds

Waiting for my GCSE results…

It seems like a long time ago now that I sat anxiously completing and then waiting for my GCSE results. There seemed to be so much pressure about ensuring I got the highest grade possible before automatically assuming I would make my way to college and academic further education, because that was the only route that seemed available to me then.

But let’s be realistic, most of us have absolutely no idea what we want to do at 16 years old or even for some of us, a lot older than that! It’s a huge decision and undertaking and we totally get that.

So, are you sat there now, end of June doing your exams and have no idea what to do next or think you’ve not done as well as you could have because let’s face it, you’re super smart but you learn better being hands-on and experiencing life?  We’ll have no fear, here’s an option for you to consider that you might not have thought about before… Apprenticeships!

But what is an apprentice?

There really is a massive misconception across the country about what they are or do and where they are available.

In essence, it’s a REAL JOB, where you LEARN, get EXPERIENCE and GET PAID. There has always been a lot of belief around this area that it’s a volunteering type scheme and you work reduced hours and reduced pay. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

You are a proper employee with your chosen organisation, have an employment contract and earn holiday + all the other company benefits that they offer.

Depending on your chosen industry or area of apprenticeship, it will last a minimum of 1 year and by the end of that time you’ll have the right skills and knowledge to do the job but to also develop further through the rest of the apprenticeship levels offered – but most importantly, a national qualification that is recognised by every employer.

Benefits of apprenticeships

But you’ll also get

  • Your own independence – its your job, no one else’s

  • Development your skills and knowledge whilst on job for those who aren’t a fan of sitting and studying.

  • Build a network of new friends

  • Be able to put your skills to use straight away and see the results immediately!

  • Receive national discounts across hundreds of online retailers!

Another belief is that apprenticeships are all about the trade industry – plumbing, electricians, painting etc. A

lthough these are incredible to do, there is SO MUCH more out there as options to take.
