Celebrating #BHM - Meet Apprentice Dzame Muruu Kombo and her inspiration Wangari Maathai

My name is Dzame Muruu Kombo, I am 27 years old. I was born and raised in Kenya but I have been living in the UK for the past 4 years now.

Growing up my parents instilled the importance of knowing and understanding my culture and values.

I grew up listening to my grandparents, aunts, and uncles telling me stories about various cultural traditions, famous and infamous people in my tribe who brought change and fought for our independence.

Wangari Maathai to me is a symbol and inspiration of Black Culture and Black Feminism as she is intentionally acknowledged for her struggle for democracy, human rights and environmental conservation.

She was the first East and Central African woman to earn a Doctorate degree. She was the first African woman to win the Nobel Prize. She was a renowned Kenyan social, environmental and political activist.

Professor Maathai was the founder of the Green Belt Movement- an indigenous, grassroots organisation based in Nairobi that takes a holistic approach to development by focusing on environmental, conservation, community development and capacity building.

She features in several books and documentaries, she has authored numerous articles and four books; The Green Belt Movement, Unbowed: A Memoir, The Challenge for Africa and Replenishing the Earth.

There are opportunities even in the most difficult moments.
