Maya Angelou was an American author, actress, screenwriter, dancer, poet and civil rights activist.
She had many jobs in her lifetime including a cook and waitress, and was San Francisco’s first female African-American cable car conductor, yet she is best known as an author. Maya wrote over 30 books and was the recipient of more than 50 honorary degrees. Her 1969 memoir, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", made literary history as the first nonfiction bestseller by an African American woman.
Her writings are still widely used in schools and universities around the world and her quotes are often used to inspire and elevate others in times of hardship.
Angelou is an icon of Black culture. Her work viewed as a mainstay of African-American culture and is often cited for its role in the forward progress of equal rights.
